Phi Delta Kappa International awards scholarships to prospective educators
through its educational foundation each year. Applicants can be high school
seniors intending to pursue an education career or undergraduate students
who are members of Phi Delta Kappa and enrolled in a college or university
education program. The JSU chapter does not have undergraduate student
membership. This year (2006), the chapter received 15 applications from
area high school seniors. A committee of chapter officers evaluates the
applications. The top two applicants are forwarded to international
headquarters for scholarship consideration. Scholarships range from $500 to
$5,000 over four years. The chapter also awards local scholarships to the
top two applicants at $350 each. These local scholarships are awarded
during the new member initiation ceremony in April.
The JSU chapter also provides awards for community service to high school
juniors and seniors. The chapter receives nominations from high school
counselors/principals. Successful nominees are each awarded $100 and an
inscribed plaque noting their achievement. The awards are given during the
new member initiation ceremony in April.
Educational Foundation donation requests are now sent directly to PDK
members by the international office rather than to each chapter's Foundation
Representative for distribution as in the past. JSU chapter members
should watch for the direct mailing and make a donation of at least $5.00.
The chapter gets credit from international headquarters for the donations
from chapter members.
